Monrovia- October 23, 2025: The House of Representatives has instructed its joint committee on Education, Ways and Means, and Youth and Sports to review a proposal for establishing a $25 million National Social Safety Net Fund. The directive follows a communication from Grand Kru County Representative Fonati Koffa, who emphasized the need for urgent relief for vulnerable Liberians.
The proposed fund aims to provide targeted support for school fees and rent payments, addressing the current economic strain described as a national emergency. Representative Koffa highlighted the plight of families becoming migratory due to rent arrears and children being kept indoors out of shame.

The proposed Social Safety Net Fund would be financed through cost-cutting measures and strategic reallocations, including reducing non-essential government benefits, limiting foreign travel, and redirecting surplus funds from the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC). The Grand Kru County lawmaker also suggested borrowing from the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) with a commitment to repay over time.
The joint committee is expected to conduct a thorough review and present its findings within two weeks.
