Government Spokesperson Denies Assault Allegations

Monrovia- October 23, 2025: Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah has strongly refuted claims that he physically assaulted a Liberian journalist in Nimba County. Speaking at a press briefing, Piah described the allegations as “baseless, politically motivated, and laughable,” insisting he has never been violent towards members of the press.

The claims, which surfaced on social media, alleged a heated confrontation between Piah and Franklin Doloque, an Ok Fm correspondent, following a public event. However, Piah denied the incident occurred, calling it “fabricated propaganda.”

“I fight my battles with words, not with my hands,” Piah said, emphasizing his respect for journalists and the media’s vital role in democracy. The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has since found the allegations to be unfounded, with PUL President Julius Kanubah urging both parties to remain calm.

No formal complaint has been filed against Piah, and authorities have not launched an official investigation into the alleged assault.
