WAEC Liberia Clarifies Misconceptions About WASSCE Results and Graduation Requirements

Monrovia- September 25, 2025: The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Liberia National Office has issued a press release to clarify widespread misconceptions regarding the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and their implications for graduation and matriculation into higher institutions.

According to WAEC, some stakeholders in the education sector have been misinterpreting the results, mistakenly assuming that passing the WASSCE automatically qualifies students for graduation and admission into higher institutions. WAEC emphasizes that the requirements for graduation and matriculation are determined by national policies set by the governments of member countries, including Liberia.

In Liberia, the requirements for graduation have evolved over time. Initially, in 2018, passing any one subject was sufficient for graduation. This was later revised to passing three subjects in 2020, and most recently, in 2022, the government decided that passing five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, is now the requirement for both graduation and matriculation.

WAEC Liberia provides the following clarifications:

  • Candidates who sit for the WASSCE are eligible to receive certificates if they pass in at least one subject, regardless of the number of subjects passed.
  • The certificates issued will only show the subjects that the candidate has passed.
  • A candidate can receive multiple certificates for different sittings of the WASSCE, with each certificate reflecting the subjects passed in that particular sitting.
  • The indication of “PASSED” in the remark column of the results spreadsheet and on individual result pages signifies that the candidate is eligible for a certificate, irrespective of the number of subjects passed.
  • Ultimately, it is the government that determines a candidate’s eligibility for graduation and matriculation into higher institutions.

WAEC Liberia urges school authorities to adhere to the Ministry of Education’s eligibility criteria for graduation and encourages them to reach out for clarification on any issues they do not understand [1].
