UMU Alumni Association Demands Suspension of Lecturer Over Bribery Allegation

Monrovia- September 17, 2023: The United Methodist University (UMU) Alumni Association has called for the immediate suspension of Part-time Lecturer and Coordinator of Peace Studies, Mr. Cyrus Johnson, following a media report alleging that he solicited a bribe in exchange for a grade. The association is deeply disturbed by the report, which was published in the Verity Newspaper and featured an audio recording on its Facebook page.

In a statement, the UMU Alumni Association described the alleged actions as a “fundamental betrayal of the sacred trust placed in him” and a “violent assault on the core values of academic integrity and ethics.” The association emphasized that exploiting a student’s vulnerability for personal gain is unacceptable, particularly for someone tasked with coordinating Peace Studies.

The association has issued an unequivocal demand to the University Administration, calling for:

  • The immediate and public suspension of Mr. Johnson from all his duties, including teaching and his role as Coordinator of Peace Studies, pending the outcome of a full investigation.
  • A swift, credible, and impartial investigation into the allegation, with findings to be made public to ensure accountability and restore confidence.

The UMU Alumni Association expects the University to take swift and decisive action, upholding the institution’s motto to be a “Light to the World” by casting out corruption within its walls.
