Grand Gedeh County- September 16, 2025: A major security operation led by Liberia’s army and other security groups has successfully removed over 2,000 people who were living illegally in Sapo National Park. The government cited the need to halt illegal mining, hunting, and other activities that were causing significant damage to the park’s ecosystem.

Sapo National Park, the largest rainforest in Liberia, is home to rare and endangered species such as the western chimpanzee and pygmy hippopotamus. Officials stress that protecting the park is crucial not only for environmental conservation but also for national security.
However, concerns have been raised about the welfare of the families who were removed from the park. Critics argue that the government failed to provide clear information on where these people will be resettled and how they will survive. Past efforts to relocate people from the park have been met with challenges due to lack of proper planning and support.
While the government considers this operation a significant step forward, many believe that more needs to be done to address the plight of those affected and ensure the long-term protection of the park. The success of this initiative will depend on the government’s ability to balance conservation efforts with the needs of the people impacted by the relocation.
