Investigative Journalist Urges Government to Ban Big Brother Naija Over Moral Concerns

Monrovia- September 7, 2025: Prominent Liberian investigative journalist, Charles B. Yates has called on the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs & Tourism (MICAT) to intervene in the broadcast of Big Brother Naija in Liberia, citing concerns over the show’s content and its potential impact on the country’s moral fabric.

According to Yates, the reality show constitutes “live pornography” that undermines Liberia’s cultural values and exposes children to early sexual activities and immoral behavior. He has urged Assistant Minister for Motion Picture, Rufus Paul, to take immediate action to restrict or block the broadcast of the show.

In addition to the moral concerns surrounding Big Brother Naija, he also accused the operator of DStv Liberia, Simeon Freeman, of overcharging citizens for subscription packages, noting that many Liberians prefer to subscribe to the Nigerian service due to its affordability, citing the disparity in pricing between the two countries.

At the same time, the Liberian investigative journalist is calling on MICAT to not only halt the broadcast of Big Brother Naija but also to regulate DStv pricing to protect ordinary Liberians from exploitation. If the ministry fails to act, Yates warns that the country’s moral fabric will continue to be endangered, and citizens will remain vulnerable to exploitation.

Meanwhile, journalist Yates has called for action, emphasizing the need for MICAT to prioritize the protection of Liberia’s cultural values and the welfare of its citizens.

As the debate surrounding Big Brother Naija continues, it remains to be seen how the ministry will respond to Yates’ concerns and whether the show’s broadcast will be restricted or blocked in Liberia.
