Monrovia- June 12, 2024: A media executive, Titus Tokpah has eloquently recounted the generous gesture of Liberian businessman and politician Benoni Urey, who has graciously been underwriting the educational expenses of numerous Liberian students, including those at the esteemed Cuttington Master School, in his commentary. The commentary also makes reference to a noteworthy post by social media influencer Bryon Browne Jr. or Bryon Bryon, expressing gratitude to Mr. Urey for his support in covering educational fees at the Cuttington Master School.

Here is Mr. Tokpah’s full commentary below:
This month makes it exactly a year since I earned my first Master’s in Public Sector Administration from Cuttington University School of Graduate and Professional Studies. At that Commencement Convocation, a heartwarming announcement was made by the administration referencing Liberian Politician Benoni Urey for giving out 1k united states dollars every year as a give away to the Dux of the CU – undergrad Agriculture College / Department. Mr. Urey is perceived as the richest Liberian citizen with a net worth of 100 million united states dollars. For me, it’s not about his perceived wealth, but trying to fulfill scripture by being a brother’s keeper shows deepening care and compassion for the needy.
Ahead of this year’s CU graduation, one of the Master’s candidates in person of Mr. Byron Browne Jr. has taken to his Facebook page
crediting his achievement to Mr. Urey. This sums up the extent to which Urey is aiding people, inspite of his political woes. To underwrite the fee of a Master’s student at CU is approximately between 4 – 5k united states dollars. There are dozens of political parties and politicians in Liberia and they command good amount of resources. However, most of their supporters only feed on crumbs they sometimes offer them, mainly during political campaign.

Urey’s effort should be applauded and complemented by others. In a country that most people survive on less than or a dollar US a day with a tiny fraction or no middle class, those privileged elites or rich must think to look out for others in need. Byron like many Liberian students home and abroad struggle everyday in various universities in pursuit of higher education. Imagine, traveling abroad on a Liberian government scholarship and later you are thrown out of school because government is reneging to make good its commitment.
Byron’s testimony about Urey’s sponsorship means a lot and places him in a category of ‘thy brother’s keeper’. It may not have been convenient for Mr. Urey to have underwritten such a huge cost, but it shows that he’s more concerned about assisting those he can reach out to than just looking after himself and family. Our personal life is forever tie to the lives of others. Success is not the amount of money or assets one owns, but the mind to be able to impact the lives of others or give back to society even when you have little. We don’t need more to start to give. Be thy brother’s keeper! Great weekend!
