Over Non-Functional Biometric Equipment in Lofa and Nimba Counties, Unity Party Files Complaint

Unity Party through its Chairman Rev. Luther Tarpeh, has filed in a complaint against the ongoing voter registration process in Lofa and Nimba Counties which the party said it has been marred by serious problems.

In a complaint filed with the National Election Commission (NEC) on May 3, 2023, Tarpeh alleged that biometric equipment used by NEC staff in areas where Unity Party supporters are concentrated was not functional, while equipment in areas where the ruling party has support was fully operational.

Tarpeh claimed that Unity Party supporters were unable to register to vote due to non-functional equipment, which he said was alarming. He said that the party had received reports from Fayah in Lofa and other parts of Nimba that equipment used by NEC staff was only down in areas where Unity Party supporters were going to vote.

The NEC has promised to look into the complaint within the next 24 hours, but Tarpeh said that such acts were not welcoming and called on the NEC to do everything possible to fix the issues and ensure that voters have the right to register and vote in the upcoming October 10, 2023, elections.

The Unity Party’s complaint has raised concerns about the integrity of the voter registration process and the potential for electoral fraud. As the country gears up for the October 10, 2023, elections, it is essential that the NEC takes all necessary steps to ensure that the process is free, fair, and transparent.
