LNP Clarifies Claims Made by One of its Senior Officers

Monrovia- May 25, 2022: The Liberia National Police says its attention been drawn to claims made by one of its officers, Alphonso Yarkpai, who alleged in a lengthy post on social media that since his injury in the line of duty on March 14, 2021, the LNP has done little towards his recovery efforts.

He further claimed that he was fired at by a fellow officer, contrary to his initial accounts that he was shot in a cross-fire by a notorious armed robber identified as “Bad man Robert ” who was later shot and killed on the night of the incident.

According to the LNP, Since this unfortunate incident, Officer Yarkpai has not reported to the authorities of the LNP until now that he claimed that he was shot by a fellow officer.

However, the LNP wishes to clarify that after the incident last year, LNP immediately admitted Officer Yarkpai at the JFK Medical Hospital where X-rays and surgeries were performed with recommendation for further treatments.

In LNP quest to grant officer Yarkpai’s advance medical treatments, the Inspector General of Police, Col. Sudue wrote a communication to the government of Liberia through the Minister of Justice, Hon. Frank Musa Dean for fundings to underwrite Yarkpai’s medical overseas.

Meanwhile, the LNP started that while it was negotiating for fundings for his medical treatments overseas, officer Yarkpai wrote an extensive list of personal things, including his treatments, totaling an amount of $43,442.00.00 USD. The list was categorized into two separate expenditures: Ghana and Liberia Expense budget.

As indicated above, of the two categories of budgetary expenses proposed by officer Alphonso Yarkpai, a grand total of USD43,442.00 was projected by him.

In view thereof, the Administration of the LNP informed officer Yarkpai that his proposed budget was ambiguous, unrealistic and it doesn’t reflect the intended purpose of his injury.

With the intervention of the Minister of Justice, the Inspector General was able to meet the Minister of Finance, Hon. Samuel Tweah who was very much responsive to the medical needs of Officer Yarkpai and without any delays approved the documentations for processing for the officer’s medical funding.

Based upon the assurance from the Minister of Finance, the Inspector General, Hon. Patrick T. Sudue mendated Commissioner Ambrues Nebo, U-104 to make all nessessory arrangements for Officer Yarkpai to be taken to the 37 military Hospital in Ghana.

Documentations and other arrangements were satisfied and Officer Yarkpai was accepted for admission and treatment at the 37 Medical hospital in Ghana, a hospital specialized in treating injured UN Peacekeepers and Ghana’s security personnel who get injured in their lines of duty.

The LNP authority further arranged for Officer Yarkpai and his wife’s lodging, an ambulance service and other personal needs to facilitate adequate treatments for him in Ghana.

Surprisingly, couple of days prior to receiving the money from the Ministry of Finance, Officer Yarkpai called the LNP authorities and announced plans to be treated at a private hospital in Ghana, ‘The Boss Medical Facility’, where he expressed confidence of his medical condition being treated well instead of the 37 Medical Hospital in Ghana and his request was granted.

Officer Yarkpai further said that he will not accept anything other than the decision taken by him and his family to receive the 20,000 United States Dollars. When the LNP authority tried to convince him that the Institution is concerned about his welfare and that it will not feel pleased to allow him and his family to handle the aspect of his treatment exclusively outside of the LNP’s involvement, he took to Facebook and posted that the LNP wanted to eat his approved money.

Consequently, the LNP authority consented to officer Yarkpai’s demands and turnover the entire USD20,000.00 to him, at which time he took down his earlier post in which he accused the LNP administration of wanting to eat his approved money.

In addition to the 20,000 United States Dollars turned over to Officer Yarkpah, he subsequently received over 2,000 United States Dollars from the LNP authorities in order to foot his return ticket, local accommodation and feeding.

Since returning to Liberia with his condition remaining unimproved, the LNP authorities also made arrangements with the AUG Insurance Company to cover all of his medical needs until such time when another arrangement is finalized to have him flown out of Liberia. He is expected to commence local treatment tomorrow, Thursday, May 26, 2022 at the Jahmale Diagnostic Hospital.

While these efforts are being made, it’s unfortunate that Officer Yarkpai took to social media to make barrage of claims against the LNP.

Hence, the LNP assures that it is doing everything possible to ensure that Officer Yarkpai returns to his normal heath irrespective of his action of using social media to vilify the LNP.

Please see attached letter of fund request to the Minister of Justice and Officer Yarkpai’s proposed budget.
