Monrovia City Police Arrest Seven for Illegal Dumping in Monrovia

(Monrovia, Liberia- April 19, 2022): The Monrovia City Police have arrested seven people for illegally disposing of garbage at sites not designated by the City Government of Monrovia. They carried out the illegal disposal on Broad, Newport and Benson Streets.

The seven people believed to be residents of Monrovia are being charged for illegal dumping that allegedly took place in Monrovia between the hours of 2:47 am and 4:10 am on Monday, April 18, 2022. Some of the items that were illegally dumped in several areas of the city include urine, bags of wrappings and peelings, and construction debris.

City Ordinance 1 section 3 strictly prohibits the dumping of garbage in the streets of Monrovia; section 1 of the same ordinance encourages residents and the public to only dispose of garbage between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Illegal dumping could result in chemicals seeping into groundwater and anyone caught dumping will be subject to a fine, possibly even jail.

The arrested men include Varney Kamara, Allen Nemgou, Anthony Fahnbulleh, Abouka Sani, Christian Zeg, John Quintor, and Saah Pokarlah. They are facing charges that range from unlawful disposal of solid waste to dumping construction debris and a fine of US25.00 each, which will be paid through the Revenue Department of the City Government of Monrovia. They are currently in police custody at the Police Charge of Quarters at the Monrovia City Hall.

In keeping with the City Government’s effort to enhance the sanitary condition and appearance of Monrovia and maintain the cleanliness of its environs, the Monrovia City Police have doubled efforts in enforcing the Ordinances of the city. Residents of Monrovia are urged to act in accordance to maintain a clean, green, and safe city.
