Who Caused The Violence At Dr. Sawyer’s Memorial Service On UL Main Campus? As Both SUP and CDC Condemn The Violence Actions

Monrovia- April 1, 2022: On yesterday there was a scene of violence at the main campus of the University of Liberia.

According to one eyewitness, the violence started when some students of the Student Unification Party of the University of Liberia decided to chant the battle cry of their party saying that they don’t want anyone with a fraudulent degree to come to a ” man of excellence” memorial service minutes after City major Koijee arrived. Our eyewitness further narrated that, when SUP militants were chanting their battle cry, Some CDC youth who accompanied the city major with a battle cry too, started to raise their voices high with their battle cry thus making SUP militants react. But a press statement issued by the Student Unification Party, says It Condemns The Koijee-CDC Violent Banditry Displayed At Dr. Sawyer’s Memorial Ceremony Held On The University Capitol Hill Campus And Frowns On The UL’s Authority For Continuously Allowing Thugs To Invade The University Campuses.

The party says it condemns the fraudulent degree chap in Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson T. Koijee and his bandwagon of savage thugs and bloodthirsty ‘Sabu Unit’ hooligans for the disruption of Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer’s memorial ceremony which was held at the University of Liberia Capitol Hill, March 31, 2022.

SUP further warns that this sheer absurdity and feeble-mindedness orchestrated by this regime of retired child soldiers stops now! “We call on the well-meaning Liberians to vehemently denounce this asinine madness- especially the religious leaders in the country and the international community (US Embassy and Swedish Embassy, etc) to strongly caution the CDC government to stop the terrorization of peaceful university students and citizens. A situation that got the proclivity to fuel tension in the country and undermines the already fragile peace we have.” SUP stated.

At the same time, SUP warns the university authority to stop allowing Koijee and his CDC delinquents continuous marauding and violent provocations on the academic premises of the university, for today might be the last day seeing drug-infused hoodlums foraying on campus to brutalize peaceful university students.

While her part, the Coalition for Democratic Change says it condemns in the strongest possible terms the outbreak of violence that engulfed the main premises of the University of Liberia during yesterday’s ‘People’s Day of Honor’, a program held in memory of Dr. Amos C. Sawyer, former President, Interim Government of National Unity (IGNU)

The CDC Said this unruly behavior & orchestrated violence, which appears to have targeted members & officials of the Coalition for Democratic Change, ignited a baseless escalation of ‘Stone-throwing’ chaos, anarchy & lawlessness, leading to the destruction of valuable properties, especially vehicles bearing the insignia of the Coalition for Democratic Change.

Meanwhile, the CDC says it is dismayed by this wanton & calculated act of violence which came at the close of the ‘’Sawyer memorial’ program as the CDC Youth Chair Mayor Jefferson T. Koijee made his way out of the auditorium; without provocation, unscrupulous elements, obviously incited by some opposition political leaders, created a baseless scene of chaos & acrimony that left scores of our partisans injured & Hospitalized.

Despite the show of tolerance by the CDC Youth Chairman, who I had designated along with the party’s Chairman/Montserrado Chapter to represent me, the incited students remained uncompromising in their misjudged decision to ferment chaos.

While the CDC isn’t at all surprised that the likes of Cllr. Gongloe will do anything in an attempt to maximize political capital at the expense of the mighty Coalition for Democratic Change, we are nonetheless shocked that students have become conscripts of their ill-will & crisis-mongering.

In apparent desperation for the 2023 election year, they need not exploit vulnerable students as a convenient shield of attack against party officials. 2023 will soon be unraveled, perhaps faster than they can imagine, only to be realized that the CDC is better poised, more energized, and set for a resounding elections victory by far easier than the last presidential election.

However, the CDC being a party that eschews violence, always showing respect for the rule of law, is reluctant to be drawn into a senseless premature showdown with anyone though it remains mightier, politically equipped & will easily outperform its self-declared opponents in an election-based process, as already stated.

Hence, as the CDC deplores the act of violence, especially on the main campus of the nation’s highest institution of learning, the National Executive Committee of the Coalition for Democratic Change is calling upon authorities of the University of Liberia to conduct a speedy & impartial investigation of this sad turn of events as a way of setting deterrence benchmarks.

Lastly, the CDC says it is calling upon all its partisans to remain peaceful, law-abiding,  and allow the law to take its course in response to this ugly situation. Chairman Mulbah Morlu recently echoed that ‘the opposition is demonstrating a defeated sense of nostalgia towards the 2023 election and is attempting to disrupt our democratic gains. “But we, as the governing party, must  keep our focus on the deliverables of His Excellency President George Manneh Weah as he continues to implement the Pro-Poor Agenda for Development.” A press statement from the CDC Stated.

But the big question is, who caused the violence on the main campus of the University of Liberia? Both groups condemned the violence.
