Monrovia- March 22, 2022: House Speaker Bhofal Chambers on Tuesday, 22nd March 2022, appointed a Conference Committee to join the Senate’s Conference Committee to thrash out differences and ratify the Mineral Development Agreement of the ArcelorMittal Liberia.
The composition of the Conference Committee followed a recommendation from the Liberian Senate after ‘reserving concurrence’ on the passage of the 3rd amendment to the Mineral Development Agreement of the ArcelorMittal Liberia Holdings Limited and ArcelorMittal Holdings A.G. and the Government of the Republic of Liberia.
The 8-man’s Committee of the House of Representatives are Rep. Clarence Massaquoi, chairman and Rep. Rosanna Schaach, co-chair. Members are Reps. Johnson Gwaikolo, Vincent S.T. Willie, Cllr. Kanie Wesso, Matthew Zarzar, Acarous Gray and Joseph Somwarbi as Resource Person.
The Liberian Senate, in a communication to Speaker Bhofal Chambers and members of the House of Representatives, said after scrutiny and deliberations on the Agreement, it had reserved concurrence (with the House of Representatives) but like to ratify the AML third amendment with the proviso of the affected matrix: “Stakeholders issues and grievances – Nimba, Bong and Grand Bassa County – and commitment of ArcelorMittal.”


In the spirit of continuous collaboration between the two Houses on the ratification of the US$800m ArcelorMittal Investment deal, the Senate proposed that a Conference Committee be setup and therefore submitted the names of its Committee to the Conference Committee, Chaired by Senator Cllr. Augustine Chea. Members of its Conference Committee are Sen. Cllr. Varney Sherman, Sen. Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence, Sen. Numene R H. Bartekwa, Sen. Simeon Taylor, Sen. Prince Moye and Sen. Jeremiah Koung.
