Mayor Koijee Receives US Congressional Delegation to Liberia; As He Presents Key Of Monrovia To The Delegation

Monrovia, Liberia- February 21, 2022: Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson T. Koijee on Monday, February 21, 2022, received a congressional delegation from the United States of America headed by Hon. Gregory Weldon Meeks at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia. Hon. Meeks, United States Representative of New York’s 5th District and delegation arrived in Monrovia on Monday, February 21, 2022.

Mayor Koijee, in a brief colorful event, welcomed the US Congressional Delegation to his city at the Executive Mansion and acknowledged the historical values and traditional heritage both Liberia and the United States share. The Mayor also pointed out that Monrovia is a city in which Liberia’s history is deeply rooted following that of American history.

He thanked the United States government through the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary H.E. Michael McCarthy for maintaining a relationship with Liberia and the continued friendship over the years.

Meanwhile, Mayor Koijee presented the key of Monrovia to Hon. Meeks who headed the delegation. According to him, the key symbolizes unhindered access to Africa’s oldest city and that Monrovia is open to development and investment.

For his part, Mr. Gregory Weldon Meeks, Chair on the US Foreign Affairs Committee expressed excitement for being in Liberia with his team and praised Liberia for being a land of freedom for its people. He said that it’s an honor to see Liberians coming back to the country to work with the government of Liberia and continue the relationship.

“Mr. Mayor, we are proud, we are honored to be on the soil that represents freedom. They also used to be a barrier. Before that, they can send it across that ocean and will never come back. But the first example of people is still coming back to work with the government and continuing the relationship, now and deep into the future”, he said.

Mr. Meeks pointed out that he along with his delegation is in the country to join in the bicentennial celebration which recognizes Liberia’s 200 years of existence, cultural value and heritage. “So we are happy to be here today in celebration of the bicentennial. 200 years of independence on this great continent”, he noted.

Mr. Gregory Meeks extolled the leadership and commitment of Mayor Koijee. He singled out the role of Mayor Koijee and asserted that Monrovia Chief Administrator is a potential young man and an opportunity for the future. “The strongest, the fastest growing, the youngest which means the most potential and opportunity for the future. And it starts right here in this great son”.

Also part of the ceremony includes Liberia’s Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Hon. Nathaniel F. McGill, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. D Maxwell Kemayah, Gender Minister Hon. Williametta E. Saydee-Tarr, Minister of Commerce and Industry Hon. Mawine G. Diggs.
