Monrovia- January 4, 2022: The ministry of Education has outlined progress in the education sector since the CDC led government came to power.
Here are some of the progress in the education sector as listed by the ministry, under President George Weah below:

REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA
𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿:
A new Education Sector Plan under development-The five year Sector Plan for the Ministry of Education (2017-2021), expired in June 2021. The New ESP is being completed to informed the development and commissioning of the Education Sector Plan on August 24, 2022. The sector Plan will set the direction for the Education Sector for five years (2022-2027) consistent with the PAPD.
Policies and Standards developed and Promulgated: Over 15 Policies and Standards consistent with the Education Act of 2011 and International Best Practices have been completed and promulgated to guide the execution of the Ministry’s development and operational agenda. Principal of these is the Curriculum for all grades and Early Childhood Programs. The curriculum is amongst 9 other standards that have been developed and implemented.
𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴:
- Continuous Learning Platform- The Ministry of Education is constructing a teaching Platform using Radio & Television that covers the Country to ensure the continuity in learning no matter what. In hindsight of COVID, EBOLA & the Civil Crises similarly, Universities & Colleges have already developed the Distant Learning Platform which is fully functional at several institutions.
- 𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 –
Virtual Laboratory opportunity has been concluded with an Egyptian Institution “The Proxy Lab” to enhance all Science Programs in Liberia. All set for instillation at all schools by second semester academic 2021/2022.
𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 200 𝘋𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘗𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 –
Given the difficulty with availability of teaching and learning materials, the Ministry is currently procuring 200 digital library (‘Smart Boxes’ containing 27 computers each and a Wifi connectivity) to be supplied to all public secondary schools in the country. These shall be in addition to the writing and publication of revised text books for students at the level.
𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
𝘐𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 –
The Government is deliberate to ensure that Girls enroll and complete Senior High across the Country. To that effect, the Ministry program provides for 3,000 girls full sponsorship through high school at 1,000 girls per year. The First cohort of 1,000 have been selected and ready to be enrolled on the program this academic year.
𝘍𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘦 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘭𝘴 –
To ensure that girls are retained in high school until satisfactory completion, 200 Female Guidance Counselors are being hired for every Government High school to provide mentor-ship and career guidance for them. While the mentor-ship shall also be extended to boys, but the emphasis for now are the girls.
𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀:
- 𝘙𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘭𝘭 156 𝘗𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 –
The renovation & rehabilitation of all 156 Government owned Senior Secondary Schools across the Country is being completed, as part of the initiative of the Government to provide a suitable learning environment for all High schools
𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 25 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘳 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 𝘪𝘯 2022 –
Designed Plans are completed to commenced the construction and expansion of 25 JSS to Senior High School in 2022 to create access to students in 25 districts of Liberia that until now do not have Senior High school.
𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 –
Since the establishment of Tubman High school in 1966-67, the Government has completed the designed and preliminary formalities for the construction of three model high schools in three populated rural cities of the country. Following the review of the donor, the construction works will begin in first quarter of 2022 to be commissioned in 2023.
𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 (𝘞𝘈𝘚𝘏) –
The MoE to rehabilitate 200 WASH facilities in 200 Jr Secondary and primary schools across Liberia. The Ministry has completed the identification and assessment of the schools. Rehabilitation work to commence first quarter of 2022
𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 –
35 students currently in foreign countries for advanced studies in specialized field of education to return to the Teachers Colleges in the University of Liberia and Tubman University including the three Rural Teacher Training Institutes situated regionally in Liberia.
𝗔𝗿𝗺 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀:
The Government also committed to provide 100,000 (one hundred thousand) arm chairs for public schools across the country to be distributed to schools determined to be most in need. The 100,000 chairs will be procured in three years, of which 24,000 are currently being produced by Liberian furniture makers, and distribution has commenced involving the quantities already produced and delivered to the counties.
Except for counties of difficult accessibility, distribution has effectively started in several parts of the Country. The 2022 budget is expected to make allocations for 30,000 chairs, while the 44,000 shall be provided for in the 2023 fiscal budget.
𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴:
𝘖𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 11 𝘛𝘝𝘌𝘛 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 –
The renovation works of the 11 existing TVET facilities in the country has advanced following the gradual easement of COVID. The equipment for furnishings of 7 Multilateral High Schools and 4 Non Academic Skills Training have been completed and awaiting deployment following the completion of the renovation. To date, Sixteen (16) of the 20 x 40ft containers are currently in country and the others to follow shortly, so that
TVET Teacher in Training: 76 TVET teachers are currently in training abroad to support 11 TVET Institutions in Liberia upon their return. A number of them will be Master Trainers with assignment at the BWI, which is being scaled up to a TVET Teacher Training Institution for the future. The total number of teachers for this purpose, shall be 120, of which 76 have been hired and in training, while the reminder 44 are being recruited for subsequent training.
𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝘀:
The Performance of Liberian students on the WASSCE and the Liberia Jr Secondary School, Liberia Primary School and 3rd grade Assessment Exams have been steadily improved over the past three years.
𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀:
𝘓𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱:
The Ministry of Education reactivated local scholarship program for undergraduate and graduate levels for academic 2021 / 2022. The program targets nearly 1,500 students identified to be deserving of the support and resident in nearly all local Universities in the country. Government allotted slots for 1,500 deserving students as of first semester, Academic 2021/2022.
𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱: :
In 2021, of the 183 Liberian students studying abroad, 29 students successfully completed their studies and returned; 6 Females and 23 Males. The students studied in Morocco (3); China (24); and India (2). And 100 students are being processed for departure early 2022. Of that number to be qualified to this round of opportunities are 38 candidates for Morocco and 62 students for China, respectively.
𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
Additional 5.9M Early Childhood Education Grant-The Ministry of Education has been granted US$5.9M by the GPE for exclusive purposes of the improvement of ECD. The grant targets the construction of 18 ECE schools in counties with limited facilities. Earlier grants have funded the curriculum, direct school improvements, and the provision of learning materials for the learners.
Nearly US$3 M of the new grant shall be applied to the construction of special classroom facilities for kids at that level. installations begin in 2022. Civil works on the various institutions shall be completed and commissioned in March of 2020, as part of the Bi-Centennial Celebrations. Based on the Government request to expand TVET in all counties in Liberia, assessments are currently ongoing to identify Schools that can be transformed to TVET centers in the remaining 9 counties. That assessment, and the site selection are just about complete which shall be followed by the project implementation protocols.
Following the massive investments currently ongoing by the Government, the performance of students is expected to become excellent.
