Monrovia- December 31, 2022: WAEC Liberia on yesterday, finally released the  2021 WASSCE results, with a alarm of withholding students involved with examination malpractices.

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) Office in Monrovia announces withholding the results of 13,454 candidates representing 32.83% of 40,977 candidates who sat the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in 2021, for their alleged involvement in examination malpractice or their schools submitted unreliable Continuous Assessment Scores (School Grades) for nearly all of their candidates.

During the official announcement of the 2021 results at their headquarters in Monrovia late Thursday evening December 30, the head of the WAEC National office in Liberia, Mr. Dale G. Gbotoe said one of the reasons for mass failure across the country is caused by the examiners and other schools authority who do not allow the candidates to work independently.

According to Mr. Gbotoe, the examinations were leakage-free in Liberia, but WAEC detected malpractices that involved some candidates and other examination workers including some teachers or school administrators.

He pointed out that, 73 schools in eight counties including; Bong, Grand Bassa, Grand Gedeh, Margibi, Maryland, Nimba, Sinoe, and Montserrado results are withheld for their alleged involvement in Collusion and Examination malpractice.

He said 8,536 candidates representing 63.45% 13,454 candidates whose results are being withheld were caught with cell phones, foreign materials, insult/assault on examination workers amongst others, while the remaining aided and abetted the process.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gbotoe announced that they have immediately dismissed the Examiners who were involved in examination malpractice and forwarded them to the law for investigation.

Accordingly, the examiners include Mr. William A. Kpennie Montserrado Biology #2 team leader, Mr. Armola Marshall Montserrado Biology #3 Assistant examiner, and Mr. Peter M. Walker Maryland county proctor are dismissed for awarding grades to students for money amongst others.

Also, the WEAC Boss maintains that the performance of students in English in the 2021 Examination is the worst, unlike over the years when over 50% passed but 17.06% this year passed.

On his part of the situation on their withheld candidates’ results, he said the final decision will be made by the Liberia Examinations Committee within a subsequent review.

These negative results continue to expose the unpreparedness of Liberia’s educational system; as others feel it has turned into a money-making place.

Each failed Student, according to the report, pays 16500. 00 LD (120 USD) to resit the national exam, regardless of the number of subjects that failed.

Others are of the view that it’s time for Liberia to resign from the examination for at least 8 years to restructure and invest more into the educational system.
