Liberia’s 200th-Bicentennial commemoration officially launched, With a Call To Unite Liberians During The Celebration

Monrovia- December 4, 2021: The steering committee for Liberia’s 200th-Bicentennial commemoration has officially launched activities marking its celebration here in Monrovia.

The Bicentennial commemoration was lunch by the minister of state/chief of staff to H.E Goerge Weah of Liberia and the National Coordinator of Bicentennial Hon. Nathaniel F.Mcgill on December 2, 2021.

This year celebration will commence, January 7, 2022, up to December 14, 2022. with official opening ceremony taking place on February 14, 2022.

According to the steering committee, the theme for the celebration is ” Liberia: the land of return, commemorating 200 years of freedom and pan-Africa Leadership”. While the Slogan is ” the lone star Forever, stronger together.

D Maxwell Saah Kemayah minister of foreign affairs disclose that this year’s theme signifies three important historical achievements since 1822 by African descent and their patrons from the United States.

he says the theme celebrates Liberia as the land chosen as a refuge by free people of African descent who endure many years of servitude in American to settle in Liberia as their home country on January 7, 1822.

Importantly he emphasizes that the theme seeks to memorialize black freedom, nationhood, and the determination of self-governance that began 200 years ago when Liberia was established.

” in an era when people of African descent were seeking freedom and self-determination, the black republic which gain its independence in 1847, stood as the clear indication that African we’re capable of self-rule.”

He pointed that the theme also acknowledged the pivotal pan-African leadership role that Liberia plays in Africa’s decentralization and independence, including its uncompromising stance against racial segregation in South Africa. ” the Apartheid.”
Minister Kemayah also reveals that Liberia later champions the establishment of a multinational union on the African continent and the global stage. Adding that Liberia plays a pan African leadership role in organizing the historic 1959 sanniquellie conference involving Liberia, Guinea, and Ghana.

This conference ultimately resulted in the formation of the African Union, successor to the O, AU Likewise joins the call on the cont intent for the creation of a regional economic organization called the economy community of west Africa state(ECOWAS) and the Mano River Union (MRU).

However Hon. Nathaniel F. Mcgill caution that the bicentennial celebration is not a political events. Therefore he calls on all opposition in the country to join the committee in the planning of its events.

Meanwhile, the Co-Chair of the History subcommittee in the steering committee Dr. William Allen is calling on the government to first unite the people of Liberia before the bicentennial main events.

According to him, the country came into existence through unity and had been through a lot of issues that have divided the citizens which could serve as a means to disregard the brilliant ideas to celebrate the coming of slaves from Liberia.

Dr. Allen maintained that the need to call every citizen’s attention to this even should not be overemphasized as he encouraged patriotic and loyal Liberian to wake to sell the beauty and history of their homeland.
