Government Sets Special Committee To Probe Alleged Police Brutality In Gardnersville

Monrovia-August 4, 2021: The Government of Liberia through the Ministries of Internal Affairs, Gender and Justice has formed a committee to probe into the matter that led to the death of Mr. Alieu Sheriff, a Liberian that was allegedly killed by police officers late July 2021.

The minister of Internal Affairs, Varney Sirleaf told newsmen in Monrovia on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at the Headquarters of the Liberia National Police (LNP) that during a meeting with LNP’s hierarchy it was resolved that a committee be established to probe the death of Mr. Sheriff. Hon. Sirleaf said that the meeting with the LNP was fruitful and that government was sending a delegation to meet the bereaved family today, August 4, 2021.

He called on well wishers who have earlier gathered on the ground of the LNP Headquarters on Capitol Hill in solidarity with the bereaved families in a show of demanding justice to remain calm as justice was going to be served.

On Tuesday, August 3, 2021, several persons with various placards and inscriptions: “We want justice; Rest in Peace Alieu; Stop Police Brutality”, gathered first on the ground of the Temple of Justice, the site of the Country’s High Court and chanted slogan in demand of justice for the late Alieu.Later, the crowd moved towards the LNP Headquarters within the vicinity of the High Court and barricaded the entry leading to the police headquarters for hours. However, the LNP anti – riot unit used teargas and compulsion to disburse the crowd when it was seen that they had obstructed normal flow of traffic along the main route leading to central Monrovia.Mike Jabateh, one of the leaders of the aggrieved citizens told newsmen at the protest site that he ordered the police to disburse the gathering because he had learned that “criminals” infiltrated the group.

He said although he requested the police to disburse the gathering, he can not take responsibility of the police action while disbursing the protestors.Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has directed the conduct of an autopsy on the remains of Alieu Sheriff.According to release from the LNP and signed by its Spokesman Moses Carter, the autopsy will establish the scientific cause of the death and aid the investigation. The LNP said the autopsy is expected in the coming days.
