Lawyers representing Jeremiah Koung tell the Supreme Court that there is no evidence adduced by Edith Gongloe Weh to discredit NEC result; pray for the high court to uphold NEC’s running

Monrovia-March 30, 2021: Lawyers representing the presumptive winner of the December 8, 2020 Senatorial elections, Jeremiah Kpang Koung has told the Supreme Court of Liberia that there is no evidence adduced by Edith Gongloe Weh to discredit the National Elections Commission (NEC) result in favor of Jeremiah Koung and prayed the High Court to uphold NEC’s ruling.

In their pleading, Koung’s lawyers led by Cllrs.Cooper W. Kruah and Arthur Johnson on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 told the judges of the Supreme Court that madam Weh’s allegation is based on presumption, deduction and there are no substantial evidence to prove votes irregularities.

They counter pleaded against appellant Weh’s that there were instances of intimidation during election day specifically in electoral districts 4 and 5 in Nimba led by Senator Prince Y. Johnson.

Moreover, Cllr. Kruah averred that there are no records to prove that NEC had irregularities during the Senatorial elections in Nimba.

“There is no basis for re -run or recount in the county. Edith’s lawyers or polling agents did not file any compliant whatsoever any where in Nimba to electoral staff. No records of complaint,”Cllr. Kruah intimated.

But madam Weh’s lawyers pleaded with the High Court that voters were intimidated, ballot boxes were tampered with by NEC’S
Commissioners in the county.

“People voted in cartoons instead of NEC’s ballot boxes.Tamper Evidence Envelope (TEE) were mishandled and not properly accounted for,” Cllr.Gongloe pleaded.

The lead lawyer of madam Weh’s legal team, Cllr. Tiawon S.Gongloe pleaded with the judges to renounce the NEC’s ruling in favor of Hon. Jeremiah Koung.

He called for re-run in electoral districts 4 and 5, and re-count in electoral districts 7,1 and 2.

But as party to the appeal filed by Edith before the Supreme Court, NEC’S lawyer, Cllr. Michael Wilkins Wright pleaded with the High Court to affirmed the ruling of the NEC in favor of Jeremiah Koung and denied madam Weh’s appeal for the lack of proven evidence.

He pleaded that madam Weh failed to provide specific evidence in her allegation against the NEC of votes irregularities as well as issue of intimidation of voters on election day, December 8,2021 by Prince Johnson.

However, the Supreme Court will make its determination in the case Edith Gongloe Weh versus National Elections Commission and Jeremiah Koung, presumptive winner at a later date.
