MONROVIA – December 3, 2020: As the December 8 Special Senatorial and Referendum Elections draw near,, the chairman of the Four Collaborating Political Parties, Alexander B. Cummings has called for resignation of all 7 commissioners of the National Elections Commission (NEC) to resign immediately due to what he calls their partisan nature.
The CPP consists of the Unity Party(UP), Alternative National Congress(ANC), All Liberian Party(ALP) and the Liberty Party (LP). The CPP chairman made the statement at the Headquarters of the ANC on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 when opposition
political parties, Civil Society Organizations and Student Groups held a major press conference to address the conduct of the December 8 Election and Referendum.
Mr. Cummings indicated that if the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) led government insists on proceeding with the December 8, 2020 referendum, Liberians should boycott the process due to its political nature.
Alexander Cummings called on supporters and all well meaning Liberians to only go to the polls to vote their senatorial candidates and Representatives come December 8. According to the CCP chairman, the Weah led government is proceeding with the Conduct of the referendum unconstitutionally. He said there is little or no awareness done across the country to inform Liberians on how to change their constitution.
The CPP Chair accused the NEC of manipulating the entire December 8 Polls in order to rig the process in favor of the ruling establishment.
“We are calling for the cancellation of the referendum due to missteps in the process”.
Mr. Cummings asserted that the NEC and CDC in May of this year postponed the senatorial election outside of the constitutional timeframe without any reference to other political parties who are key players in the process expect the ruling CDC “This unilateral action by the NEC and CDC led to the legislature coming up with a joint resolution to postpone the election to December 8, 2020” He said.
CPP chairman noted that NEC again along with CDC unilaterally launched the Voter Roll Update exercise without any reference to political parties who are equal competitors in Liberia democratic process.
He said ” The mobile VRU became a missive scheme of fraud ranging from Voter trucking, multiple registration, creation of ghost voters and registration of foreign nationals, the mobile process which in 2014 during the dried season failed to register a target of 120,000 voters for five weeks, we are now made to understand magically that 300,000 voters were registered in two
weeks during this raining season with bad road conditions”.
Mr. Cummings said despite many calls and pressure from opposition political parties, NEC had refused, neglected and failed to clear up the 2017 Voters Roll which he said is in violation of the November 2017 Supreme Court ruling and the June 5, 2020 joint resolution of the National Legislature mandating that a clean up process of the 2017 FRR be conducted by the NEC with the involvement of political parties.
The CPP chairman further mentioned that
“The failure of NEC to be fair and transparent led us to proceed to the supreme Court with the hope that Justice will be served, but we hoped in vain and waited hopelessly, and the supreme Court would not even mustered the courage to entertain our petition calling for the voter’s roll to be clean up or the morality
to hear our complaints”. He said in total disregard to the supreme Court that the official Gazette with three condensed propositions, inconsistent with the
constitution and can’t not be use to print ballots and hold the referendum, NEC in collusion with CDC, is forcing and rushing the national referendum. He noted that without an Gazette from the Foreign Ministry listing all eight propositions the referendum
is being rushed and forced by NEC.
He said ballots on the propositions are being printed without consultation and consensus with political parties on the symbols to represent proposition on each ballot. He furthered said that the public has not be educated enough on each of the constitutional amendment.
“We reserve the right to peacefully assemble and we will be doing so over the coming days to call attention to our legitimate demands, we would like to warn the CDC and the NEC that we are aware of plans to rig the senatorial election, but we have put in place a measure to protect our votes and would resist vehumently any attempt to harjack the well of the people”.
