Liberia International Partners Endorse Saturday, January 4,2020, As the best viable option for the Council of Patriots to stage their protest

Monrovia- Liberia International partners, the US embassy, European Union, UN and ECOWAS have said that after examining statements from the government and the Council of Patriots, they have endorse Saturday, January 4,2020, as the best option viable for the much talked about protest.

Here is the full statement below:

JOINT STATEMENT OF THE AMBASSADORS OF THE UNITED STATES, THE EUROPEAN UNION, ECOWAS, AND THE UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR IN LIBERIA WITH REGARD TO THE POSTPONEMENT OF THE PLANNED DEMONSTRATION IN MONROVIA ON 30TH DECEMBER 2019.

After examining the various recent statements issued by the Government of Liberia and the Council of Patriots on the planned demonstration and following further extensive and encouraging discussions with all stakeholders on the postponement of the demonstration, we endorse what appears to be a reasonable outcome as follows:

  1. The initial proposed dates of 5th and 6th January 2020 have been determined to be inherently problematic for holding a peaceful mass assembly;
  2. To accommodate the desire of the people for immediate redress, this leaves Saturday 4th of January 2020 as the best viable option, and may be retained as such;
  3. In line with the experience of the peaceful assembly that was held on June 7, 2019 at the Capitol Hill, the 4th January 2020 peaceful assembly would also be approved to be held in the same venue;
  4. In this context and in the interest of general public order and safety, we respectfully call on the Government to provide appropriate security protocol guidelines and measures for the event as was done for June 7, 2019;

We note with deep satisfaction the efforts of all parties to uphold the principles of peaceful coexistence under the Rule of Law and in consonance with the Constitution of Liberia.

We exhort all Liberians to continue on this path of promoting good governance through their national institutions and individual actions.
