Ganta, Nimba County- The Cooperative Development Agency (CDA)-Liberia in collaboration with its development partners on Saturday, July 20,2019 observed International COOPERATIVES Day (ICD) in the commercial city of Ganta Nimba County, under the global theme:”COOPS 4 DECENT WORK” with the local slogan:Cooperatives, Togetherness; Cooperatives, Empowerment and Cooperatives, Development.
The observance of the day wh was held at the Peace Empire Hotel on the outskirts of Ganta, brought together various farming and non- farming organizations along with some products.
Giving the overview and importance of the ICD, the Registrar General of Cooperatives, Republic of Liberia Madam Regina Sorkan-Teah, said the aim of the celebration is to increase awareness of Cooperatives and highlights the contributions of Cooperative movements in resolving the major problems addressed by the United Nations and as part of efforts in strengthening and extending the partnerships between the international Cooperative movement and other actors.
According to her, recent estimate indicates that Cooperatives around the world are the main source of income for more than 279 million people, almost 10% of humanity’s total working population.
Madam Teah used the occasion to called on national government to give more attention to agriculture Cooperatives as they play a vital role in the creation of jobs and the socio-economic empowerment of local communities across Liberia.
On December 16,1992, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of Cooperatives by Resolution 47/90 to be observed in July each year by all UN member countries.
Serving as proxy for FAO Country Representative Madam Mariatou Njie was Dr Bob Karnuah. Dr.Karnuah pointed out that the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recognizes the strong value that Cooperatives bring and is working to promote the growth of agriculture Cooperatives.
Dr. Karnuah recommitted the FAO’s continuous advocacy for cooperatives through the distribution of seeds and tools, construction of poultry and warehouses and provision of Day old chicks to Liberia’s rural farmers.
Established by an Act of the National Legislature in 1936, the Cooperative Development Agency (CDA) is to identify, mobilize, institutionally organize, transform, ultimately register and regulate farm and non-farm grassroot individuals into viable cost-effective socio-economic cooperative entities.
