No Common Solution; Council of Patriots remain firmed on June 7 Protest, after meeting with the president

Monrovia, May 15, 2019 – At the well and organized Unification day dialogue with some members of the Council of Patriots there was no common solution; The Council remains firmed on her decision to protest but only asked the president to prevail on his Justice minister to grant them permit to assemble and to respect the Constitution.

The meeting was also attended by peace stakeholders, including envoys of the African Union, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), United Nations, and leaders of the religious community, traditional council, and legislature.

Representatives of these groups individually showed support to the forward march of the country through peaceful engagements such as the one called by President Weah.

The President hoped that up to June 7, “we can continue to dialogue but if you insist on protesting, we’ll ask the Justice Ministry to make sure that they guide you to ensure that the assembly is done very peacefully not to infringe on the rights of other people who are going to school, work and business centers,” president Weah told CoP.

After the meeting, Spokesman Dillon said that the invitation addressed to them from the President’s office about the meeting did not mention anything as spelling out their grievances.

In a related development, President Weah told the audience that the government can only work to address cardinal national issues and not ones that are personal or marginal.

The President reiterated his commitment to promote unity, the rule of law, and respect for diversity amongst the citizenry “and that’s why we need to dialogue no matter what.”
